Later that night, Shay lay in bed holding her phone and debating whether she should text Jace. She didn’t need to talk, but she wanted to, wanted to know there was somebody out there on her side. But he might still be with his friends or getting ready for bed. She closed her eyes as the image of a bare-chested Jace filled it. Shay smiled. One advantage of working on a dive boat meant she saw him bare chested on a daily basis, so the image was very clear. Her phone beeped and a text message appeared.

How’d it go? Jace.

Her wide smile stretched across her face. Nice to know he was thinking of her. All right, she replied. Dad sent Norman home, so it was just family.

What was Norman doing there?

Turns out he was Gram’s boyfriend when she was my age. They’re catching up.

A row of smiley faces appeared followed by, That’s great. Go, Norman.

She laughed and responded Go, Gram.

So how is your dad?

Shay’s mood plummeted. Fine. He doesn’t get why I was upset.

He’s focused on your mum.

Jace was right. She blew out a breath. Maybe she needed to be more considerate. Yeah, she texted back. I’ll see you tomorrow.

Sweet dreams.

You too. She smiled and snuggled down, turning off the bedside light. She’d definitely have sweet dreams tonight.
